How to include Mate in your breakfast routine

Whether you’ll be working from home, making deliveries from your van, or headed to an office, Mate can easily fit into your routine. Starting your day regularly with Mate instead of coffee has very significant health and performance benefits.

Firstly, as Mate’s caffeine is bonded to the rich polyphenols in the leaf, it energises and awakens you in a softer, smoother way. The Mate-sipping ritual also creates a moment of focus and presence, allowing you to mentally prepare for the day ahead. It’s natural micronutrients, vitamins and minerals, help support your immune system and healths. Last but least, Mate’s gut-related benefits insure that your body digests foods, processes and removes toxins, very regularly and before your busy day that’s ahead.

Although Mate is mainly drunk on its own, it can also form part of your favourite breakfast routines, in replacement of coffee or tea. Here are three simple breakfast ideas that pair well with Mate:

Yerba Mate & sliced fresh fruit
Whether in the warmer months to start the day with something fresh, or in the winter to insure intake of key nutrients such as Vitamins C and E. Mate naturally pairs well with fruits such as Oranges, Kiwis and all sorts of fresh berries. Many people use bits of fresh or dried orange peel as a topping to slightly flavour their Mate, and also benefit from the fruit’s essential oils contained in the skin . This can also be done with other citrus fruits such as grapefruits, lemons and limes.

Yerba Mate & sourdough breads
Mate’s taste profile is not too dissimilar to high quality green teas. It is herbaceous, slightly bitter and astringent and earthy. So, as with green tea, it tends to pair well with similar breakfast foods.

For athletes in training, a specified amount of carbs is critical fuel. So, we would recommend starting the day with two good slices of sourdough bread, topped with a source of protein, such as organic eggs, smashed avocado or olive oil and sliced tomatoes.

The salty, sweet, toasted and woody flavour notes from the bread and toppings pair very well with Yerba Mate’s bold taste. Also as with green tea, feel free to sweeten your Mate with a small amount of honey or sugar, to your liking.

Yerba Mate & intermittent fasting
Whilst the two recipes above tend to be start-of-day routines, we also know many people have adopted intermittent fasting as a way of better managing their food intake, digestive health and bodyweight. This has led to many people delaying their first meal to later, in the mid-morning, or to an earlier lunch.

If you plan on waiting until mid-morning to eat, then starting the day only with Mate is a great way of your body receives nutrients, 1 litre of water, and helps you feel more satiated until you break the fast.

Personally, I drink Mate early every morning, as I sit down to work and plan out my day. Only late in the morning or lunch time do I take in food.
